Wheel/road noise issue... whir-whir-whir

Hi I have been searching through the forums and haven't been able to find an exact answer. Was wondering if someone could help me.
I have a 2005.5 A4 2.0T Quattro, sport suspension and stock tires. Only driven 15k miles so far.
Recently I've been hearing a whirring type noise that seems to come from the tires area. Its not easy to tell which side cause its fairly audible throughout the cabin. The sound volume is linked to the speed, basically the faster I drive the louder it gets. However the sound itself seems to be oscillating. That is when I drive around 10-20 mph its a very low sound and oscillates whir---whir---whir. When I drive faster, ie 40+ its almost a constant sound and louder.
I recently took the car in for the 15k maintenance and told them about the sound. When I picked the car up, the dealership said that the sound was within manufacture spec. A few days later I took the car to get the tires rebalanced and rotated at an independent place. This didn't seem to help, the sound is still the same.
Yesterday I was examining the tires and saw a nail in one, so I got it removed earlier today. Interestingly the nail didn't puncture the tire so no repair needed. But even after this the noise still persists.
I have read that wheel bearing could be an issue but at 15k miles, would this be the cause? Also turning the wheels left or right when driving does not appear to make a difference to the noise.
Any help would be appreciated.

After only 500km with my new A4 Avant 2.0T Quattro S-line, I think that I observe the same thing.
My previous car was Golf IV Gti, and I haven't yet decided if
a) it is my mind (interior is so quite that I can hear any other sound)
b) it is from tires (Bridgestone Potenza RE050)
c) it is the Quattro system or
d) it is the road surface
Apart from this car is prefect and it is AMAZING the way it turns around corners
