When to replace brake pads ?

I have an 06 A4 2.0 Quattro w 28K. Bought it used a year ago, only added 5K miles. When purchased I was told (by the dealer) pads had about 4mm remaining, should be replaced. Figured they would last another 5k, and a few weeks ago a different dealer told me I had ... 4 mm left and should replace them. They said rotors looked ready for one more cycle so only need to replace pads.
Should I replace the pads now or can I run them to 2mm w/out damaging the rotors ? And any suggestions on good/low dust pads for ordinary street driving ? Hawk ceramic or HPS ? Thanks much.

Running them longer certainly increases the chances of scoring the rotors with the backing plates.
PBR Ceramics, Hawk HPS, Carbotech Bobcats, Mintex Redbox are some of the more popular lower dusting pads.
For daily driving they're all just fine.
