Windshield Wipers No Longer Work (after sheet of ice off semi trailer hits)...
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/25784/r8_v10_1.jpg"></center><p>
A group of us made the annual trek up to the NAIAS this year, which by the way was somewhat of a disappointment outside of the red R8 V-10 and red B8 S4, among a sea of white Audis. The 2010 Shelby GT 500 in dark blue with dark wheels actually looked pretty bad-*** too!
Anyway, on the way back we were driving along at hwy speeds (;o) and as we were passing a semi, a HUGE piece of ice came flying off the top of the trailer and crashes into our front windshield, immediately breaking the pside wiper arm loose from its mount, ice sliding off and the pside wiper coming to rest in the center of the windshield - as imagined, it scared the S%#@! out of all of us; I could not believe the windshield did not crack/break. After the ice, snow and other debris hit, right away the auto wiper feature started the dside wiper and the working wiper ended up getting stuck on the broken pside wiper. I turned off the wipers and was able to get around the truck to get him to pull over.
The driver initially ignored me when I tried to get him to pull over, but once we pulled along side and yelled to him what happened, he took the next exit. The driver was very pleasant (in an apologetic way) about the whole thing and we exchanged information, getting his dispatch and company insurance card.
Now, both wipers do not work. The pside wiper is loose and you can move it around easily. The driver side is firmly connected still but does not move when you turn on the wipers.
Any idea how these wipers connect and work?
What might be expected for repair?
Although I plan to take the car in today to the dealer for service, I figured I'd ask around to be somewhat informed as well as tell an interesting Audi content story.
Thanks!<ul><li><a href="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/25784/r8_v10_2.jpg">http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/25784/r8_v10_2.jpg</a</li></ul>

Wow! That was the exact response I was looking for. Thanks!
The dealer said they had to order a "wiper transmission" and it would be in on Wednesday. Besides that, I had a damaged A pillar trim piece and both wiper blades need to be replalced too.
Man, I am so glad I got the driver to pull over and provide the insurance info.

I know in PA the driver is responsible for all ice and snow that comes off their vehicle.
I think a family lost control of their car after getting hit with a sheet of ice off a semi and crashed with life altering injuries.
You're pretty lucky that it didn't come through or even break the windshield.

It's probably as simple as the wiper coming off its linkage system. It
happened to our Q7 back in May, and the dealer fixed it in about a 1/2 an hour. But nothing hit us, it just become loose, and stopped working.

Thanks! And I hear you. I read an article in the Detroit newpaper how the German automakers ...
may pull out of the autoshow after next year (the article also said, they almost did this year). The German companies cited, in the article, the Cobo Center is expensive, old and dumpy, and that they may do better focusing their efforts on the LA autoshow.
At this rate of automakers dropping out of Detroit, there won't be much of an autoshow in a few years.
Then, we'll have to go somewhere like Chicago, New York or even out to LA.

That is a scary thought, but completely believable. I agree the truckers should be held responsible
for debris flying off their trucks. This truck driver even said to us that he saw the big pieces flying off and was concerned about what might happen if they hit a car - ah yeah!
I plan to call the truck's insurance company on Monday and one way or another I do expect this to be handled in a righteous way.
Thanks for the input.
