It's getting close to that time again for us Northeasterners. I have performance Dunlop Sportmaxx on my S-Line and now i'm researching my options for Winter Tire/Wheel combos. I'd really like to get a set of blizzek tires, but i dont' want to drop huge amounts on winter wheels. Any suggestions?

Don't waste your money on Blizzaks. I had a set and they lasted me 2 winters. They are way too soft and wear out too quickly. Go with a set of Gislaved Nord Frost tires. Made by the Sweedish winter people.

I've tried a lot of winter tires, and I swear by Toyo. For me, I would skimp on summers over winters! I'm in Canada, and basically I expect snow and/or ice from November until May. Snow, and worse, ice/slush is handled beautifully by the Toyos. If not Toyo, Hakkapelitta is very good. I agree on the Blizzaks...forget them.

Last November I bought Tire Rack's A4 winter tire package which included Dunlop M3 winter tires and Sport Edition wheels. My A4 arrived in January so I put the winter tires on right away. Had miserable vibration problems from the start and luckily I noticed that the Audi lug wrench did not fit in the wheel bolt holes so I carried a 19 mm socket wrench with me in the event I got a flat. Tire Rack said they forgot to send me the centering rings. Tried those but vibration returned. Turns out that the Audi lug bolts were not seating properly and coming loose despite 90 foot/lbs of torque. (Rounded Audi bolt surface & V-shaped contact point in the wheel bolt holes) Now Tire Rack tells me to return the wheels since they agree that they are not A4 compatible after all. But they do not have any other wheels in stock that fit my A4. Plus, they will not take back the winter tires. So now I have to dismount the tires and ship back the wheels. I then ordered a set of wheels from Gary at Ronal that fit perfectly. He included the centering rings and new lug bolts that matched the wheels. My advice...spend the extra money and get the wheels from Audi or Ronal. As for the winter tires, go with Nokian.
