Default Xeon Lamp Failing - Lifecycle 2 years?

Hello everyone,

Just got 3 weeks ago a 2006 A4 quattro as stablemate for the TT.

Even when I love the A4 I just got an error with Xeon lamp failure. If I manually shut the lights off and turn them back on the lamp comes back on-line.

The dealer suggest that the lamp may be close to its lifecycle.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Any thoughts?

ps - will post pictures of the A4 as soon as the weather improves a little...

I had this problem. If you are under warranty take it to the dealer, search out the TSB on the forum. My dealer ultimately fixed it for me free of charge, but claimed they couldn't warranty the job b/c Audi was now rejecting these warranty claims. I was getting the right dipped headlamp warning, but turning the lights off and on always fixed the problem. Good luck.

Default AFAIK a xenon bulb is supposed to last the lifetime of the car, but YMMV.

For example I see some people driving with xenons all the time during the day. This would be much higher than "average" usage and therefore their bulbs may fail sooner than someone who rarely drives with them on.

Default Yeah, that's what I thought too.

I'm going to send out the car to check more carefully later this week. I will post follow ups.

Default You should get 5-6 years of "normal" usage from a bulb.

The bulbs do not last forever. They start to fade to a pink-orange color as they fail. Look for an older Acura TL, you might see what I am talking about.

If your problem is something else, I doubt the bulb is the problem.

What ^^^ said. There is no such thing as "lifetime".

Default Was told by the dealer that it's most likely the bulbs that for some reason die at 2 or 3 years...

It's BS that they are not a warranty item over 12k. I was told they die due to rough driving. So much for truth in engineering. Audi is going in the wrong direction with the warranty...

Rapid parts in Monsey NY have the Philips bulbs that last longer and cost half the dealer price.

Default How would it work one minute, and not the next minute?

It's a sealed piece of glass with gas within and two electrodes through which electricity is applied. Either it works or it doesn't.

If the lights work intermittently, the place to look for issues are the ballasts, connections and the switch, not the bulb.

Just my $0.02...

Default Quick Update on Re: Xeon Lamp Failing

A follow up note. After more than 1 trip to the dealer, both lamps have been replaced under the standard warranty.

If you´re experiencing this issue, you already know that it may work perfectly for several weeks, followed by a couple of days of bad service or complete black out.

Since the new laps have been installed, I have had ZERO issues, and I am very pleased and happy to see my car with bright new headlights.

Best of luck to you all!
