Default $5,000 discount on new 2009 A4, good price?

Shopping for a new car for my wife.

For a $44,000 MSRP A4 2.0TQ car, dealer is asking for $39,000. Is this a good price or I should try to offer at 38k? 38K is still a lot of money for a 4 cyl car.

Does any one know how much tax rebate for a new car this year?

It would help specify which model A4 2.0T it is and what options are in it. (ie. Premium, Premium +, Prestige, Nav, Sports package)

Default I think it's a great price too

From the MSRP, I would guess it's a Prestige, but I don't think it matters all that much which trim level it is and what options are on the car. $5K off a $44K car is 11.4% discount off MSRP. The only thing to think about is whether you want to wait for the 2010 model to get 3G MMI, but that's a non-issue if you are not getting the nav package.

For what it's worth the 2G Nav is still being offered in the UK but it's now £1.5k where it was £2k.

i.e. you could be paying £500 too much for the old technology by getting a car a week early.

Thanks all for your inputs. This is a 2009 P+ Avant 2.0Q Audi A4.

I'm thinking if I go for this I will save 5K but I won't have new NAV & LED tails. If I wait and go with 2010, I think I can only get 2K max discount from 2010 MSRP?

I'm not sure if new NAV & LED is 3K worth. What do your thoughts?

it's more about depreciation I think. 5k off a 2009 will i think be equal to a 2k discount on a 2010 when you factor in 09 vs 10. still doesn't mean it's a bad deal if you esp if you are keeping car for 3-5 yrs and or just have a price you want to pay. ps 5k off is pretty good!

Probably not $3k difference in depreciation -- $2800 would be about a 7% residual difference for a 40,000 car. I don't think the residuals for the '09 have slid that much yet -- unless the '10 models are expected to have higher initial residuals than the '09's -- perhaps first model year issues?
