2.0T vs 3.0

I had a loaner for five days while our Avant was in the shop. After driving it I determined that I like the 2.0T more than the 3.2. The 3.2 is a smoother engine but the transmission shifted a little more harshly at times as it tried to figure out if I wanted to be sporty or casual. Also, the throttle response was too abrupt sometimes and strangely lagging at other times just off idle. Not what I expected from a normally aspirated engine and I figure it’s the same sport/casual conflict with the drive-by-wire throttle. I even had two identical instances pulling out into traffic (same place, same circumstances, same everything) where I floored it without tripping the downshift trigger and ran it up to around 6k in full sport automatic in 1st, then the drive-by-wire cut the throttle when it shifted into 2nd even though I still had the accelerator floored. One second going like gangbusters, the next second… Nothing. Very, very strange.

I liked the feel of the power curve on the 2.0T better as well, even if it lacked the ultimate oomph of the 3.2. After a couple of days I could tell the 3.2 was more powerful but it just didn’t come across that way because the torque curve is so flat. Even though the 2.0T’s torque curve is very flat the off/on boost transition makes it feel more peaky. There’s something to be said for coming onto the boost.<o></o>

I mentioned all of this to our sales lady and she confirmed that Audi is discontinuing the 3.2, but she also said they’re replacing it with a supercharged 3.0. I’m a little skeptical. Isn’t that the S4 motor? Speaking of S4’s, Molle Audi in KC has several on the lot now.<o></o>

As for the shop we now have control arms on order and found out Audi still hasn’t issued the TSB on the low speed power steering vibration/shake.<o></o>
