EPA figures for the the 2011 A4 quattro with the new 8-speed tiptronic transmission were recently posted on fueleconomy.gov and it is still rated at 21 in the city but improves by 2 MPG from 27 to 29 highway versus the 2010 model. Inexplicably, the 6-speed manual 2011 increases by 1 MPG from 30 to 31 highway but decreases by 1 MPG city from 22 to 21.

I got to drive one yesterday and the transmission sure wants to get into those tall gears in a hurry in auto mode. It makes the engine feel pretty flat most of the time. Sport mode works nicely though. This engine seems to respond well to manual short shifting and the extra ratios really keep you on the torque curve.

I recall the same thing happening with the B6 and B7. Mileage numbers would change nearly every year, often with no mechanical differences or explanation. A typical Audi/VW thing.

Nevermind. I thought you were talking about an 8 speed DSG. This is a Tiptronic discusion. I should have known an 8 speed DSG was not a reality. Heck the new A7 sportback only offers a 7 speed S-Tronic (DSG). And the USA might not even see that.

ZF did claim an approximate 10% increase in fuel economy between their 8-speed and 6-speed transmissions. As was also mentioned, though, these numbers seem to change a bit every year for no discernible reason (probably just the values obtained on the re-test by the EPA on the new model.
