Default 2012 A4 B8 could it have the issue?

Ive been trolling these forums heavily because Im finally looking at a newer A4. Problem is the dreaded oil consumption issue and Im finding out that early 2012s could have bee built with the wrong rings. The built date is August 2011 for a 2012 Model car. Anyones insight in this would greatly be appreciated. Thank You

You've got to assume it could have the oil consumption issue regardless of any quoted cutoff date.

We see on CARFAX reports when cars have had repairs. I would check that. I would inspect the exhaust tips of the car. I would confront the owner on the issue.

Yup thats what im doing now and I know how to check the tailpipe for excessive carbon buildup, after Ive test drove it of course. My current B6 does not burn excessive oil so Ive been in there (tailpipe) every once in a while to see and get a baseline of what "normal" carbon buildup.is.

Again, check the CARFAX and see what you can learn from it.

I went through the carfax and there is nothing regarding oil leak or fluid leak. I've seen other B8 carfax that had inspected oil leak or something similiar. Nada on this Carfax

Yeah, this problem would not be classified as an "oil leak". We're talking about replacing pistons, rings, and sometimes much more. It's serious.

Are there other marques you might be considering, Sky?

There are not currently. Ive found a 2013 and 2014 that fit in my price range but they even seem to have the issue sometimes getting up above 60,000 miles . I had great luck with my B6 A4 and love the styling updates but this piston\ring issue is turning into a pain in the neck.

You are 100% correct and makes it very difficult for me to recommend something from that generation. They represent a terrific buy right now if you can find one that has been properly repaired. The oil consumption is not the only serious engine problem with this generation

Are ALL 2012s bad ? When did revise theses pistons or rectify the problem in the build process?

I don't know what percentage of the population is affected. It's much higher than one would typically expect.

I think they claim 2012 and later are supposed to be "fixed", but that hasn't been accurate based upon all the reports we keep seeing.
