400-hp 3.0T RS 4 and 450-hp twin-turbo 4.2 RS 5?
Something sounds fishy about the 4.2 V8 RS 5 making only 450 hp and 332 lb-ft, barely more than what the normally aspirated 4.2 engine in the B7 RS 4 was making. A 400-hp 3.0T RS 4 would also be a big disappointment. Hopefully both are false rumors.

110% wrong on both counts.
the S4 is expected to replace the 3.2. rumors are that it may even be renamed A4 3.0T and a HO version made to be called S4- with about 380 hp. as such, the audi corporate statements saying that there will not be a B9 RS4 are accurate. but the good news is that the S4 (circa 2012 MY) will have 380 hp and once again position the "S" model a cut above the updated 335i (with 333 hp) that will be introduced in frankfurt this fall.
this same nomenclature change may accur with the A5/S5 as of 2012 MY.
the RS5 will have a gen II version of what we now call the "RS4" engine. with valvelift and a new engine housing and possibly a mild increase in displacement. this same engine will replace the base V8 in the R8. it is expected that this new engine will make about 460 hp and 340-350 lb/ft torque.

Fourtitude talks with Carter Balkcom
Before everyone jumps to the conclusion that the 3.0T could appear in the A4 lineup anytime soon......

The 3.2 is still on the books in the UK.
The S4 isn't being heavily discounted. If fact it's the hardest model to get a deal on.
Having said that from January to May's MY2010, the 2.0T has gone up £1k.
The S4 hasn't changed at all.

To me, this truly pinches the range more so than 2.0T v. 3.2 v. 3.0T.
Is that platform gone, before it got here?
3.0TDI a better challenge to 3.2 IMO... Sure hope with all these turbos and S/Cs that VAG have a better grasp on reliability...

I test drove a dynamic suspension car this weekend ready for my re-order and it was the 3.0TDI.
It's a superb engine!! I came from an approx 390bhp B6 S4 and the V6 diesel had so much torque it made me think of it! It's effortless! The only things I didn't like were :
[1] the thought of filling up with the smelly stuff
[2] the limited power band/rev range
[3] the cost!!! In the UK an S4 is only £800 more!!

Great article for those of us waiting for pricing on the B8 S4; the logic seems to make a lot of practical sense.
I love the fact that he (Audi Product Mangager) actually says the S4 should be priced against the 335i (non X-drive version). If this is a reality (in Cnaada as well), I'll have one in my driveway next spring, and I'm pretty damn excited about that.
Thanks for the link Bob.

Scotty, you would be mad to get the 3.0tdi, after a fortnight it would bore you silly.
The new S4 is a peach, get one of those ordered instead.
