I'm ready and able to order brilliant black A4 Avant, SLine with everything in it (except adaptive cruise and lane assist (lane assist looks now to be bundled anyway with the prestige?))...
Should I wait and test drive the 3.0 A6 Avant? That might have the updated MMI... worth the wait? Am I just being impatient?
I think I like the options available in the A4 versus what, as of now, will be available for the A6. And I think I like the sportierness (new word) of the A4... But the A6 Avant is beautiful, a little more 'lux,' better engine(?), updated MMI/Nav (?), and has more than a tad more room in back for the family. Oh, and price... which is an open question.
Writing this makes me more confident about the A4... am I missing anything?
Will I get a different answer if I post same question in the A6 forum?
Thanks for any helpful comments.

think it's a space issue. a6 will have sig more room but if not for that then why not
save some money.
I'm tempted on a6 b/c of the engine. but not sure about the handling vs a4. may have to wait for test drive.
good luck! the good news...both are great so hard to go wrong.

Re: think it's a space issue. a6 will have sig more room but if not for that then why not
The A6 (assuming no changes from the '08) does not have significantly more room than the B8 except in the back seat. The B8 has more front headroom, only about 1.6" less shoulder room and a larger trunk by a cu. foot.
Having owned an older A6 and driven a newer A6, the A4 is a much more nimble car. While it's not much smaller, it handles like it is. The A6 is what I would classify as a "touring" sedan and the A4, a sport sedan.

Having had both, I would say on the highway, it's a marginal difference.
The B8 is surprisingly comfortable at soeed on the interstate. Even on long drives, I've found it to be comfortable and have had no stiffness or back issues. The real difference is on the twisties where the A4 is a heckuva lot more fun to drive and the A6 is more cushy.
Now, for back seaters, the difference could be much greater.
