Because a lot of these "boutique" oils lack the additive package necessary to allow operation of the engine as designed by the lubrication engineers. All the brands like Amsoil, Swepco, Lucas, Royal Purple, Torco, and even some US formulas for mainstream brands lack the extended performance needs of the latest engines.

The research departments at most of these small volume oil sellers can meet in a phone booth. The companies themselves lack the funding to determine
if their products meet the specifications of makers like VW, Daimler, or BMW.

Most of the reputation of these brands come from anecdotal endorsements from fans of the product. Many of them are used in racing where the demands on the oil are only that it perform on a single day for less than 500 miles before it is replaced.

Stick with what is specified. Your engine will thank you.

NJRoadFan, did you even click on the Amsoil link before blasting me about it not being approved..

"AMSOIL 100% Synthetic European Car Formula is formulated to surpass the most demanding European specifications. It is recommended for European and North American gasoline or diesel vehicles requiring any of the following worldwide specifications:

API SM/CF
ACEA C3
ACEA A3/B3
ACEA A3/B4
BMW LL-04
Mercedes Benz 229.31, 229.51
Porsche
Saab
Volvo
Volkswagen 502.00, 505.00, 505.01
DaimlerChrysler MS-10725"

I got this from this website

http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/afl.aspx

So either Amsoil is lying, or Audi is overlooking Amsoil.

Actually, Amsoil is being very deceptive. Read again the text you quoted above. They are merely saying they recommend this oil for vehicles requiring those specifications. No where they are claiming that their oil actually meets these specifications. They basically just think their oil is good enough for cars requiring these specs. Meeting the VW spec requires running the oil in an actual engine and then doing a bunch of wear measurements. A small company like Amsoil probably doesn't want to buy a brand new engine for each of these specs and then run the tests.

From one perspective, Amsoil is getting away with a technicality in their marketing language. From just a common sense perspective, they are a bunch of liars.

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about which oil is the best. These are already a select group. Notice, for instance, that the regular version of Mobil 1 5W-30 hasn't made the cut. But if you want to look even deeper into this, you could do some simple things such as sticking to oils that also meet the very latest BMW/MB specs (like MB 229.5/229.51)

So to answer your question, you could just pick the cheapest one from the list
