Economy overall yes, the Jetta fits but what about the masses that want to be seen in a luxury car
but like the idea of getting 40+mpg? I think with mpg like that, it's easier for those buyers to justify their purchase for a diesel even though they know they will be paying about $20 more per fill-up at the pumps.
I would be all over the 3.0 if it came here, believe me. Thing is who represents the purchase of the 3.0, Audiworld or the real public? Audi has spent a lot of time and money trying to get diesel accepted but now it looks like they are going to wait for BMW to make the move and see how they come out of it. If gas prices start back up on the upward trend, I think the 2.0 TDI would sell very well in the A4. The 2.0T is already the biggest seller for Audi in the A4 line and its the only luxury brand offering a four-banger in this segment. Then again, if Audi wants to be taken seriously when it comes to performance... Like you mentioned, all about how they market the vehicle.

11 pounds - huge improvement in engine block weight...
what is worse for Audi is 540Nm torque vs 500 in Audi's one - I was posting that info. And, BMW's 2.0 turbodiesel is better than Audi's - 177hp vs 170, and more economical. After BMW's facelift, 2.0d may be mated with xDrive (4wd).

well, just looked at BWM's site. Everything is not so good for BMW
first, magazine in which I've read about 540Nm made a mistake - site says 520, which is only 4% more than Audi's 500. Second, 320d/330d-xDrive are heavier than A4 2.0tdi/3.0tdi quattro (remember that BMW is 15cm shorter).
What is bad for diesels at all (and that's why Audi is so reluctant to bring them into US) is that nothing comes for free. They are economical and produce a lot of torque, which can be converted into 0-100km/h numbers comparable to equally-priced gasoline versions. But they are not so reliable - pieso-injectors tend to die sporadically, without dependency on their age (this can happen a few month after purcase). A new one costs $500. I'm sure services will stare on dead diesel engine without understanding anything.
