I originally didn't think I wanted it. I now realize, I would never give it up!

Both my Avant and my wife's A3 have the open sky system. The interior does seem to get warm - more so than it not having the open sky system but I love the sun and am really liking the extra glass up there. Passengers in back tell me they like looking out it - especially at night. I do think that Audi should have put the solar panel in the glass ( like the Allroad )so that it could power an interior air exchanger.
I guess if it was really an issue you could tint the glass with solar film?
Not sure about getting it without the sunroof, but I dig it and wouldn't have it any other way.

As covered above, the interior does get hot, even with the shade extended.
But it is a pretty nice feature, and we couldn't imagine going to a regular size sunroof in an Avant. One other positive: it takes less time to wax the roof, since there is less of it!

I never open my sunroof of my B5 A4. That is why I wonder if this is a deal breaker on purchasing this car. I worry if this is a feature that will just add heat to the interior while parked, reduce headroom, and add weight up high in relation to the cg.

I'm in Houston where we're having record heat. Just got an Ibis White B8 Avant and still have an Ocean Blue A3 with open sky. The A3's open sky allowed a lot of heat in, even with the shades drawn. The solution was Huper Optic on both the front and rear glass panels.
With the Avant, had the option to do the same thing. Drove it for a couple days before tinting, and was pleasantly surprised with the lack of heat coming from the glass panels. With just the windows tinted, the A/C fan runs on low even in 105 degree heat.
In any case, B8 Open Sky < heat than A3 Open Sky

I love mine. And I hate mine.
I love it for the expansive view and airy feeling. But I honestly rarely open it. I just like to look through it.
At the same time, I hate it because, like all Audi Open Sky sunroofs, it can't withstand the torsional twisting of the car body like plain steel. It creaks like mad over bumps and I've isolated it to the passenger side rear corner. Check A3 and Q7 archives for posts from owners complaining about the noisy racket their sunroofs make. Here is a link to a TSB that I plan to take to my dealer on my next visit (hopefully mine can be fixed with a similar method):
