When I put my 2010 A4 in reverse to back out of the garage, it beeps at intervals as I start to back up. But there's nothing behind me for yards, except the opening to the garage.
Also, there are some times when I put it in reverse in a parking lot and it emits a steady tone for quite a while, when the nearest object is a car maybe 15 feet behind me. What's up with this?

It not only senses to the rear but sort of in a conical rearward scope.
Just imagine how much fun it is when we have the bikes loaded on our hitch mounted bike rack on the back of our '10 A4 BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE..until I take it out of reverse.

Yeah, get the same thing from the edges of my garage door, but never steady like I'm close to impact.
BTW, you can at definitely turn the volume down/off, and I think change the tone and sensitivity through the MMI, if I remember correctly.
I love the camera - every morning my dog is standing right behind the car when I open the garage, completely invisible in the mirror. Good for my two kids and their friends too...
For a few months, I drove a car without sensors or camera and I was completely at a loss backing up. How quickly I have become dependent. Like the side assist too, but never depend on that.

Anyone know how to turn off the sensor via VAG-COM? It drives me NUTS in the winter as snow blocks the sensors and then they beep all the time when I reverse, even when there is nothing behind me for miles around. For some reason, stupid American car designers were able to figure to include a disable button for the rear parking "aid", I'm not sure how the smart, smart, smart German's couldn't figure it out as well.

As already mentioned, what causes this for me is something close to the rear/sides or snow/ice buildup.
I love the backup assist, but have become totally dependent. I forgot I was in a rental on a business trip last month, backed up a bit too quickly and smashed into a pole as I expected a beep (without thinking). Even the camera which I thought was unnecessary at first, I am now looking for when backing up in other care. Technology can certainly be a double edged sword.
