Aren't the parking sensors emitting a constant beep for anything closer than 12"? That's usually pretty easy to estimate once you've had the car for a few weeks. Make the thing more precise than this and you may be onto something..

I'm not sure exactly how close it is when the beeping changes, but I guess that's why it's nice to look at the MMI screen and actually see what's back there. I typically stop when the beep becomes constant.

Having both the sensors and the backup camera are very important to me -- so much so, I would wait 3 months for a replacement.

I never thought I'd like the back up camera but I do. I have a narrow driveway with only about 6" clearance on either side before I start running into the grass. The view out the far away and high back window (relative to the driver) of the Avant is such that I can't see the driveway itself, only the air space where I'm headed, so it's useful to keep myself centered and off the grass. I don't use it in regular parking lots (too many other directions for people to come at you for the camera to be really useful) and haven't had the chance to try it for parallel parking yet (I'm thinking I'll like it there and could become spoiled).
