Default Brake Pad Warning in 2010 A4 Quattro

The brake pad warning showed up on my information display this morning, but went off and hasn't returned. Anyone know how this warning gets the signal and what circumstances might lead to it's apparent intermittent operation?

There's a cable attached to the inner front left brake pad. Quick google comes back with "Brake pad sensors generally consists of a rubber enclosed wire loop. The loop is installed in a predetermined location on the pad. Once the pad wears down past this point, the wire becomes frayed and/or cut, breaking the circuit which your ECU (engine computer) will detect." So if that's how it works, I'm not sure how it could break and then unbreak the circuit, unless maybe contaminants are closing the circuit while the break is small? This site from the quick hits says more, Brake Pad Wear Sensors ; not sure the specifics of our B8 pads. I'd just check the pads; you're probably close. That, or something about the sensor cable broke? Maybe the connector is loose.
