It was a press car, and even if you tip toe in these v8s, you rarely get over 11-12mpg city in the manual s4 and 10 in the RS, so what's the point?

Default Sarge, these are all really good points... just get out there and drive the cars...

As my sig shows, we have a B6 A4 1.8 TQM. It's been a great car and I recently gave it a power boost with APR 1+. Wow, is it nice to drive now. Unfortunately, the key immobilizer is acting up and the part is coming from Germany. So...

We are driving a B8 A4 2.0 TQ6A loaner for a bit. First impression: boy is this boring to drive... and wow are those outside mirrors ugly and huge. Have never owned an automatic and don't really care to own one, although the R8 I saw at the dealer today would be OK!

Boring aside, the new A4 does drive very nicely, rides a bit better than our A4 and is very smooth, which it should be for a new car. The new 2.0 T runs OK but our slightly modified 1.8 feels much peppier. Would love to try a 6M Avant with S-Line.

Would like to know where all the so-called extra room is in the back seat. With the front seat set for my 6'1" frame I think there is less room behind the driver than our A4. I also think the interior looks and feels kinda cheap (S-Line I saw at the dealer looked MUCH nicer). Don't like the leather, don't like the hard, smooth plastic, and I don't like the standard seats either. The whole car kind of reminds me of what a Europeanized Chevy would be like, if that makes any sense. Guess I just like the look and feel of the B6/B7.

Which brings me to the RS4. Was very close to pulling the trigger on one this summer, and am still considering it. I love the looks of the RS4 and the engine is a dream and sounds fantastic. Don't think most women would like it (although my wife does) and especially those used to an automatic. MPG is a concern, but not a major one as I would only drive it 5-8K miles per year.

Of the new B8 line-up I like the S5 the best, but my wife does not think we need another 2-door as we have two of those already. Have only driven the S5 briefly, but it was very nice and the engine had great sounds. Considering an RS4 can be had for less than the cost of a new S5, my choice would be RS4 as I think you get much more car for the money... although you do get a few less bells and whistles and a more dated NAV and stereo. Resale on the S5 is probably better as the RS4 prices have tanked quite a bit lately.

All these cars are very different and need to be driven. It will be interesting to see if we warm up to the B8 after living with it for a few days. I think we will. Who knows, jumping back into the B6 may seem odd... but I have a feeling it's going to feel more like home.

Have fun.

Your 1990 Porsche 944 S2 is bringing back fond memories for me.

Default Seemed really low.

The press car comment speaks volumes about how you could get 6mpg. People don't usually drive press cars like they drive their own car (I know this first hand).

The RS4 has the same EPA rating as the S4, so it really shouldn't be any different.

I wasn't trying to rile you. 6mpg is understandable since it wasn't your car.

My point is that 6mpg is not typical city mileage for the typical RS4 driver. That's all.

its totally cool. I am 31, almost 32. When I am in a manual, I almost always want to run through the gearbox. Unless I have passengers, I drive pretty swiftly and get bad mileage. If I were to slow down and get double the mileage, I would probably be disinclined to row the gears, but as you know in your RS, driving a lot slower enables maybe 1-2 more mpg. Maybe 3. And then I ask myself, what i the point of having such a fine automobile with such a big engine if I don't enjoy it for the sake of earning 12 instead of 10mpg city (in the S4).

mentioned age because I am getting a 2.0t avant in what I hope is a relaxation of my driving style and habits. My smallest engine, slowest car since college, first automatic. I know that I will drive this car slower. I think. Being in an automatic makes me chill out on the gas. The time I borrowed a prius, I pretty much hypermilled the entire time, and it was a cross between meditation level relaxation and a video game to earn the best mpg. Loved it.

I'm 37 and my 2.0T didn't do it for me, so I had to mod it, but when you mod then things wear out faster and I wanted a car that I didn't need to mod. Thus, I had to go with the RS4.

Hopefully you don't regret getting the automatic - I get enough of an automatic driving our truck, plus I don't commute. If I had a long commute I'd maybe consider an automatic but then you kill any track enjoyment. Too bad the A4 doesn't have the DSG...

Default I've owned the S2 for 11 years and have modified just about every aspect of it's performance.

Just got a new set of Diamond Black BBS RS-GT wheels and I love the way they look on the S2. They really change the character with the dished rims. Would like a set for the A4. Sorry for the bad later afternoon November lighting... but boy would I take that today... we had 10" of snow and it's snowing like crazy again... thank goodness for Quattro :-)
