The A4 3.2L quattro does 0-100 in 6.1 wheras the 325i does it in 7.7.
Thats the model that the 3.2 actually competes with, but it must pain you to see a BMW "comming up the rear" as you would say.

Your right with the RS4 vs M5, what the hell is with that. And S5 vs M3 as well. They seem like "common folk" to me though who really don't know what they are talking about, evidenced by them not understanding how to match up and compare cars. Something which I would say is a simple task for most.
Whats next, Q7 vs Bugatti Veyron.

adult cannot seat at rear in BMW 3. As simply as that. If another adult is driving and adjusted driver's seat accordingly of course
BMW 5 matches A4's interior space.

Testing technique has a lot to do with it. I figure Edmunds drives a car more conservatively, i.e. closer to what someone who's making payments on it, would do than, say, Top Gear would.

Then if you look higher, I saw an S6 as being only 1/10th of a second behind an M5 around the track, so the RS6 should be much faster than it. Some still say the RS 4 is better than the M3 as well.
On lower Audis that are FWD the RWD BMWs are better but certainly not when you look higher up. I think a lot of people who buy these cars in the US are very ignorant too, because the prices are less when compared to other places in the world, opening the cars up to the lower levels of society in many cases. I mean, only a peasant could make such a comment as the person they ran in to at the petrol station in the article.
Performance and engine specs are important, but its not the centre of the universe and there is more to a car than just its engine and 0-100kmph times. I think places like Europe etc have a better understanding of this in many ways. Its a very american thing of "mines bigger than yours (or faster) and thats all that matters". Which I think is really tasteless and common.

Just look at the prices and tell me why consumers shoud view the S5 and not the A5 as the direct competitor to a 335.
S5 Base Price = $50,500
A5 Base Price = $39,900
335 Base Price = $40,800
You probably don't want to read the C&D Best-handling shootout from last year where a bone stock $40K 335 turned faster lap times than the "M3 Killer" RS4. It's going to be interesting to see how the new S4 will outperform a 335.

But to compare strictly on price points is ludicrous. Why not compare an X5 to an S4 then? Or a Corvette to an M3 or RS4?
Looking beyond the prices (which I contend are much closer once similarly optioned out), the performance numbers on a B7 S4 are much closer than an A4 to the 335, never mind what the B8 will look like.
And for the price, you get AWD plus the nonpareil Audi interior creature comforts. Those factors clearly make up the price difference.
Price points, while not entirely irrelevant, shouldn't be the determining factor in setting up the comparisons.
