Engine Oil Recommendations

So I'm new to the sporty car scene (big poser) but loving my '09 A4. I was just wondering what are some recommended engine oils. I've heard Amsoil, and Pentosin as some good recommendations, but I just wanted to get a second point of view. Do you guys go with the recommended 5W-40 also? are do you just go with the 5W-30. My friend is saying that SAE 5W-30 from Chevron will be fine, but just wanted to see how you all felt. Thanks!

Read the manual and use the recommended grade of syntheic oil. I have a case of Mobile 1, 0W-40. However, I have not needed to add oil (9800 miles). When I change the oil I'll use an Audi OEM oil filter and Mobile 1 0W-40. It is very important to use oil that meets the VW/Audi/Porche standards that are posted. I believe that Porche uses Mobile 1, 0W-40 as their factory fill.
The A4 B8 is a great car. I'm loven' it too!

You will probably discover that Porsche fills their cars with a Shell product as Mobil Oil products are not generally available in railroad car tanks like Shell in Europe. The oil is meeting the VW/Porsche standard.
The Audi needs a oil that meets the standards set by VW for the engine. Most often the "Boutique" oils like redline, amsoil, royal purple, and lucas cannot meet the specification, and should not be used. I know these all have fanboys with anecdotal stories how it is the best stuff since the dino's died. They are wrong. The specified oil has an additive package that has a longer life than most synthetic oils. Note that all Mobil 1 oil is not recognized as meeting the spec. Only the 0W-40 has the special extra additives that protect your motor from sludge. There are other approved oils, some 5W-40 that will work just fine.
Don't add any oil that is not approved by VW, AND it must quote the spec number on the bottle. Words like VW approved and OEM specified are advertising fluff and must be ignored.
Carry a bottle of approved oil in the back. It is not always easy to find if your add oil warning comes on.
Keep an eye on your dealer too. Many of them have been putting less than desirable oil in new Audi's.

Simple...the oil must meet or exceed VW 502.00 and 505.00 standards. Castrol Syntec 5w-40 and Mobil 1 0w-40 are two such oils. My dealer uses Castrol Syntec 5w-40. This can be bought at the dealer or at most Pep Boys or Autozones. Stick to the recommended oils.
