Default Front License Plate

My new 2009 A4 came without a front license plate holder. The dealer sent me a new front panel that has a license plate holder and i installed it today.

However, it appears that even after taking off the old panel and inserting the new panel, I still need to drill holes for the 2 license plate screws. Is this correct? thanks

Yes, I found this odd at first and thought it was missing a part. The front license plate holder does not have any holes pre-drilled for the plate - you have to do it yourself.

Actually, more accurately, use two self-tapping screws. And don't let the dealer tell you they don't make them in stainless steel (the ones holding my dealer plate were beginning to rust during my first couple of weeks of ownership) - they do, I'm using them.

Mount the top screws, and then it'll be easy to use self-tapping screws for the bottoms.

And yes...I can't believe it, either. But hey, by not drilling those two holes, they saved us $0.07!

Not all countries use the US format for front plates. The mounting holes are not in the same position. Audi could make different holders for each country, or make one part that looks like Swiss cheese. Since they specify self-drilling and self-tapping screws, holes in the bracket are not needed.

jacko627 I need the opposite. My 09 a4 came with the license plate holder and I really want one without (I got Florida plates so no need for the front license plate). Unfortunately my dealer claims not to have any of those can we trade?

I don't need yours because I have my plate on already... the dealer sent me the right part. I was going to sell the plateless panel on ebay, but i'll give it to you for a cheap price just to avoid the headache. e-mail me at jhakimian@gmail.com
