Yeah, statistics are great and all -- until you're one of those unfortunates that gets a 'bad' car.

I just sold my 1997 1.8T - it has 188k miles. Although the first 60k miles had a bunch of problems, the next 120k were relatively trouble free. That is, I don't consider replacing a rear spring on a car with 150k+ miles a problem.

So personal experience trumps any printed info -- so I bought a new 2012 A4 -- hope it treats me as well.

And for Lexus to be ranked lower than Mercedes and Acura, there is no way. Toyota is most likely the most reliable car made.
Now with all this being said. They way Audis and BMWs drive make up for the reliability headaches they pose. not to mention if you sell it after 3 or 4 years after you have put on 60-65K miles then you should have not much to worry about, but I would never consider owning a german car over 60,000 miles.
The rankings cited above were for JD Powers' initial quality survey, which is nearly useless as a predictor of long-term reliability. For example, if a consumer dislikes a certain aspect of a car's design, such as the navigation system interface, the car's initial quality rating will suffer.

I have a 2010 A4 2.0T Quattro 6MT (bought in August 2009) with about 55k miles on it now. From a pure enjoyability standpoint, it's the best car I've ever owned. I have had a few problems. Yes, it does eat the oil -- I typically add a quart every 5-7k miles -- but I can live with that. There have been a few trim issues (the clasp for the sunvisor breaks too easily and the door-lock button on the driver's door pops in and out for me. Again, minor issues that I can live with.

But the biggest problem has been the clogged fuel injectors and intake valves. I had a fuel injector fail at about 22k miles and then between 45k and 50k miles I had all sorts of issues with the intake valves clogging up from the carbon deposits. Now that I'm out of warranty, I'm wondering how much longer I can afford to own this car if it's going to become a money pit with this carbon deposit issue...
