Default How pocked is your windshield?

35k miles on the 2011. I've got quite a lot of micro pocks in my windshield from road debris. It's not noticeable until you're driving into the sun.... I had thought it was tree sap that I couldn't wash off - so when I clay barred the car this weekend, I realized what they were.

I live in LA. So now sand or salt... but I wonder if the lack of weather lets bigger debris build up more.

Try Bar Keepers Friend on your windshield also. It works really well to get the really tough stuff off the glass.

Default Too much for a four year old car

My first Audi; I have to wonder if Audi just uses poor glass or if it's a new industry issue (the last car I owned having been made in 2002, in Japan).

Car was in for service recently and they said all that can really be done about it is a new windshield. If I do, it definitely won't be Audi OEM.

Sorry, I don't see where I can edit the post to change the pic to something sized down smaller.

I remember when I first had my B8, and I posted about it on another forum, that it sounded like the windshield was getting hit by a lot more debris than my previous cars. I'm wondering if it's an aerodynamics issue.

I hope it is better than the ones on my previous MB which had to be replaced 3x over a 9 year period.

Auto glass is nothing special aside from the PVB between the sheets of glass to protect you in the event of breakage. Some is better, namely that from Japan or Germany, or even the USA, but the rest of the world glass is not so finely finished.

I too am on the third windshield for my MB, but my Audi is fine. I do use RainX emulsion treatment that makes the glass smooth and more likely to shed debris without digging.

If you have a rain sensor on your car, you should save some headaches by replacing with OEM glass. The aftermarket guys seem to have trouble attaching the sensors correctly.

If your car went through a sandstorm the comprehensive portion of your insurance should pay for replacement.

My windshield doesn't have any signs of pock marks, but instead is covered by hundreds (thousands?) of thin, horizontal surface scratches. It appears that the scratches are either caused by the windshield wipers or the ice scraper that I use frequently during the winter. My previous Mazda dealt with the same winter conditions as the A4 and the windshield was not covered by scratches, even after six years of ownership. It seems that Audi windshields use a "soft" glass.
