Default Interesting tidbits from the VW 2.0T chain-driven TSI study guide.

While this is not the Audi Valvelift motor that will debut on the B8 A4 it is of the same new design, but basically missing Valvelift.

I figured others may be interested in some things I had not seen posted about before.

- The crankshaft is made of forged steel. (I can't recall if the B7 2.0T has a forged crank I thought it was simply cast.)

- Cracked connecting rods.

- Connecting rod bearings use bi-metal on the upper shell and tri-metal on the lower shell

- Coated piston skirts

- There's three chain assemblies. (Balance shaft drive, camshaft drive, and oil pump drive.)(Gear chains instead of roller chains.)

- It appears to use a special oil filter with a integrated sleeve to allow its topmount design to drain the oil back into the pan when removing the filter. (I get the feeling Audi will charge a hefty premium for that for at least a year after launch.)

- The PCV valve is designed to open under high pressure inside the crankcase to prevent damage to seals due to over-pressure. (Some B7ers, VW, and A3 guys know that problem.)

- There's an after-run coolant pump. (I can't remeber if it had been removed on the B7.)

- The main coolant pump is toothed belt driven off one of the balance shafts. (Plastic impeller...not really news there, just noteworthy.)

- High pressure fuel pump has a reduced fuel delivery rate. (Higher and more consistant pressure is desired.) It also appears to be driven with a roller cam follower now. (Should eliminate cam wear issues.)

- Six hole fuel injectors. (One key benefit....reduced oil thinning.)

Interestingly there is not much detail about the turbo other than one exists.

Default Huzzah on those maintainability items. It's about damned time, should make living with it easier.

Plus the after run coolant pump is a nice benefit with a turbo-charged car. At this price point you shouldn't have to futz with cooling down the engine after regular driving - certain things should just be handled for $40k!

Default Doesn't the "old" (current) 2.0T have an after-run coolant pump?

I swear I hear an electric pump running for a few minutes after I shut down my TT. Or is that just an auxiliary fan?

The TTs do, even back to the 1.8T TTs, but the rest of the 1.8/2.0T applications don't have it.

Default All transverse mounted 2.0Ts (A3/TT) have the afterrun pump because they NEED it.

The longitudinal 2.0Ts in the A4 do not have it because they don't need it. The position of the turbo with longitudinal mounting prevents the heat soak that the transverse engines would suffer if they didn't have the afterrun pump.

Interstings, so it's likely the Audi version won't have it again.

Default I would assume that the B8 won't need it but we'll have to wait and see.

Being a new engine, there is no way to know for sure until Audi releases more information.
