Is anyone aware if the 2009 Audis will support charging of the iPhone 3G with the Audi Music Interface (AMI)?
With Apple dropping support for 12v firewire charging on the new iPhones for 5v USB charging support only, there are many reports that existing systems and devices will no longer charge this new iPhone.
I've read reports of some that say it works and others who say it won't on 2008 and earlier Audi models for example.

I believe that this is not an issue - either old or new iPhone 3G is confirmed to work properly on 2008 models at least, from a data, music or voice perspective. 2009 models should be no different.
It's the charging that's at issue due to Audi and most other manf. possibly ignoring Apple's previous announcements that eventually they would no longer support charging with 12v firewire, only the 5v USB pins.
What isn't clear, is whether previous and/or 2009 Audi models with AMI/MMI use firewire or USB in the connectors. I've read yes and no.
It seems most car and device manf. chose to ignore Apple's warnings and continued to support the firewire charging. With the 3G having being the first iPod/iPhone to remove firewire support, charging will no longer work on on any car system or device where the manf. uses the easier to implement 12v firewire charging circuit.
