because no one wants to pay for a new MAF
or for a filter that does not more than OEM

Not that I'm advocating for K&N, BUT...

K&N refutes it but do a search on B5 forum or any of the other with some long history
and you see multiple stories of it happening
So If one has a IQ of 60 or above one will check this out and make ones own conclusion
I use to have the links to a independent guy who did some great studies on a bunch of filters and it showed how much dirt the filters let pass through. If I find it I will post again<ul><li><a href="http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95380">BMW testing</a></li></ul>

I had a K&N in my race car..and it worked fine...
The K&N has issues with the oil getting in places it shouldnt be in audi applications..namely, on the MAF wires.
