I am in the market to purchase a new Audi A4. The problem is that I live in Reno NV and we don't have an Audi dealership. The closest dealership is in Sacramento CA, about 3 hours away. I have been talking to multiple dealerships in northern CA about paying sales tax and registeration at the Reno DMV. I have gotten so many stories, that I don't know what to believe.
Story #1. I have to pay the taxes twice. Yep, pay once in CA then again in NV when I register the car. I find this very hard to believe.
Story #2. Pay taxes in CA. Then when I register the car in NV, pay any difference in taxes. CA taxes are higher so there shouldn't be any difference to pay.
Story #3. Don't pay CA taxes. But, at my expense, pay to have the car delivered in person to Reno. This includes time for two drivers and a chase care so they can get back to Sacramento. Then pay NV taxes when registering the car. Also there is a CA fee that I have to pay to have the car temporary driven across state lines.
Anyone have any feedback on my situation?
thanks

You pay sales tax where the vehicle is registered.

Krazed, can you check (Website) or call the CA motor vehicle people?
I've bought cars/motorcycles out of state before and never paid sales to anyone but my home state.
If CA really does collect, do you get a credit in NV?

I bought in NC and live/registered in VA.
I paid the taxes in NC when I bought the car.
VA waived the taxes since I had already paid them.
We have property taxes on vehicles here, so I did have to pay that in VA - ugh.

I bought a car in CT. I payed NY taxes and the dealer arranged the registration in NY. They put ct transporter plates on it so I could drive it home to NY and wait for the NY registration to arrive. It took a week.
