New Tire Pressure Monitoring System for U.S. 2009 B8 A4 and A5?
After doing a bit of research, I have read that the new US B8 A4 (and A5) would employ a new indirect TPMS system developed by Nira which exclusively uses software via the ABS system and tire rotational differences to provide an alert for low tire pressures. Supposedly, this forgoes the need for battery operated electronic sensors in each wheel.
It also improves upon earlier, less sophisticated, indirect systems as it does not depend upon measuring one wheel against another for low tire pressure which is a disadvantage of other indirect TPMS systems in that alerts would not occur if multiple tires were simultaneously at low pressure. It supposedly calibrates to each tire and can detect rotational speed against the base line via the ABS and other software algorithms.
If true, this would be a clear win by eliminating the cost and hassle of removing/replacing sensors for wheel/tire changes or for a second set of winter wheels and/or tires.
Has anyone confirmed this? I've got an email into AOA and will see if I get a useful response.

http://www.moderntiredealer.com/t_print.cfm?action=art_det&storyID=1465</a

Unfortunately, the A4 does not have that feature with either direct or indirect systems.
While I would agree it would be nice to have readings for each wheel displayed like the A8, it's not the case with the new A4. One idiot warning light for all tires is all you get.
The point of the new system is that, if true that the new TPI has been implemented on the 2009 A4, it will not require expensive sensors for new tires/wheels. Which means that functionality that wasn't there in the first place is not lost for 2009 A4 owners.

Are you trying to find out if that is the system in your '09?
If you have metal valve stems on yours then that is the older individual sensor system. The ABS style system has been in use in GM cars for over a decade. The twist being, as you mentioned, the new system would account for simultaneous multiple low tires.

That is great news for us winter tire changers
In my 2006 A4 all winter I get warnings that my winter tires without sensors are low in air. The 2009 A4 is a great set up so now when I change to my winter setup the new style check for low tire pressure will adjust and I won't be getting that annoying low tire pressure warning.

Well, mine appear to be metal which likely means active sensors.
Bummer if true. AOA called me back and is trying to find out. Promised me a call back by Fri.
