Really poor gas mileage-or is it?
I haven't precisely calculated MPG, but I do know my light comes on at around 260-270 miles. Actually, my last receipt said I got 14.4 gallons. I divided 270 by 14.4 and I get 18.75? That seems really low. I only travel 4 miles or so one way to work, so I can only assume this short trip is the reason for the poor mileage. It's a fairly straight run with 2 lights. My car is barely warmed up all the way by the time I get to work. I use premium fuel (whatever is the highest octane where I stop for gas) and I always fill up. My '08 A4 gets way better gas mileage, although I did notice a slight drop when my commute shortened. I used to drive 10.5 miles one way to work and would average 330 miles before the light came on then my commute changed, but I still got decent mileage on the '08. My V6 Passat got better mileage too.
So is it this new 8 speed engine, or the short commute causing this poor gas mileage? Or is this as good as it gets due to the short drive? Outside of going to work, we always take my car when going out somewhere. But that's only 1-2 times a week. Does the trip computer have a way to calculate MPG since the last fill up?
Any tips/advice is appreciated.

Getting around the same on my 7 mile commute to work in downtown. Highways is much much better: 35-36mpg on long drives. Don't think you can do anything to get better mileage in the city.

I wouldn't call where I live 'city', but with such a short commute, I guess it can be compared as such.
Thanks for the feedback

I am getting around the same as you. It went up a little to around 20.6 or so now. But still hovering in the same range. There are less than 700 miles on mine, so I hope this improves, but I was expecting better results either way.

I select display mode by a short press at "Reset" and the "Up/Down" switch at the end of the wiper arm.
It seems common that the trip computer average calculation is too optimistic by 5-10%. I have adjusted mine 6% (with VCDS).

Yeah I'll confirm that short trips are really bad for observed fuel economy in my 2011 A4 and my parents' 2011 Q5 as well... About 18-20mpg in my observation for my city/highway mix. On long trips I'm about 28 or so mpg.
And yeah the trip computer in my experience is about 5% (~1mpg) optimistic.

I'm @ 4500 miles on my 11 avant.
I've been averaging about 300 miles per tank, give or take a few.
I drive about 15 miles to work 1 way, and it's mostly highway. I thought my mileage would improve, but looks like I'm going to be around this range from now on.
I was hoping for a lot better as this ain't much of an improvement over my old v8 a6.
I though I could attribute some to aggressive driving and the 19 inch summer tires. But with the new 8 speed tranny & mostly highway driving, the fuel light going on @ 270 miles is a bit of a bummer.

As others have said, the poor mileage is due to your driving habits. On my past two tanks, I have gotten around 15 mpg, which makes 18.75 seem great. The combination of short trips, very cold weather, and constant deicing has conspired to ruin my mileage. Back in the fall, I was getting around 20 mpg.

So much for direct injection and fuel economy, huh?
Sold a bill of goods, our 2002 A41.8t with indirect injection easily gets 28 in winter. 30 summer....and I don't have carbon buildup to worry about there.
New cars are "supposed" to have technologies to enable better economy, but I don't see it happening. Sure, the 2.0 is faster and all, but I still get to work early and home late no matter what car I drive!
