I am sorry to read that Art no doubt suffered a financial loss because of the dealer failing to service the car properly. The suits at Audi USA protect the company profits by setting up hoops for owners to jump through when expensive repairs are necessary.
Audi has a rather high acceptable oil consumption rate for their cars. It is set that way to avoid warranty repairs, and push them far enough ahead so that the owner is saddled with the costs. This is good for Audi in that it causes premature retirement of vehicles because the repairs exceed the value of the vehicle. This means less used cars to compete with new car sales.
1 quart in 1,200 miles is considered normal by Audi. Many people report one quart in 5,000 miles. It strains the bounds of believability that this is a "normal" range.

First of all thank you all for your input. I really absorbed what many of you said, and you were all very helpful and provided a few points of view. I will summarize my feelings and thought process herein...
I loved the Audi overall but was always feeling the A6 would have been a better choice for me...I had reservations about a 4 but I thought the A4 would be ok..and it was for quite a while..
The most disappointing things to me were in the details. The dealership had ratty loaners with almost 35-40k miles, and in one case filthy. I had one too many cases of reporting noises and issues multiple times only to be told no problem found. I had reported the lag issue about 4 times. In one case I told the service advisor that the cig lighter plug was not working IN THE LOANER and saw they took apart MY console and cleaned the connections..
Then came the adventure of the steering vibrations...in both cases I had to provide the TSBs to the service advisor because he didn't know about them...the power steering hose was replaced easily but the upper control arms required a couple weeks of arguing between the dealership and AoA...which when done I told Audi of America that they would not keep customers by making it this difficult to fix problems they were well aware of.
Fast forward to last month, made a service appointment to deal with the oil issue and the accelerator lag almost 2 weeks in advance and show up and NO loaner...rescheduled and when I brought the car in, the service advisor became confrontational with regard to the oil consumption. He said it was normal and threw the VW oil consumption notice at me.
What I have a hard time believing is in this day an age any company would be able to sell a car whose engine burns a quart every thousand miles and is considered NORMAL.
It was suggested elsewhere that I take the car to another dealer for service but then no loaner.
I did give my dealership tine chance to make things right ..the GSM is a friend and felt terrible and was trying to put me in the new A6 at a REALLY good price but as I said I became gun-shy about Audi in general. I'd say that while Audi makes a great car, they do not pay attention to the details and to the customer experience as BMW does.
Finally on Friday morning as I cleaned out my Audi, I had to call Audi of America to have them help me wipe all the saved items such as contacts, destinations etc. The agent asked me why I was disposing of a 2010 Audi and I said honestly that my ownership experience was less than satisfactory. So this Customer Relations specialist said she was sorry and never asked me to provide details....so I guess customer retention is not important to Audi after all.
I now have the BMW 2 days and am getting used to it. Both cars are excellent, but at the end of the day it was the ownership experience which swayed me....
