Snowflake icon on temperature gauge?

First time I've driven the car in cold temps today. The snowflake icon came on in the temperature gauge at 38 degrees F. There was some moisture coming down and then when it was at 32 we hit snow. Once we came through a tunnel the snow stopped and the temperature shot up. The icon went away. So I am trying to figure out if the snowflake senses moisture/ice/snow or if it is always there at low temps as a kind of warning.
Thanks.
Thanks.

On my B6 I'm pretty sure it went away below -5°C.
I was always under the impression that it was a black ice warning and this only forms between -5°C < +5°C.
On the B8 is does say below 4°C ..... so why also say "Do not rely on the outside temperature display as an ice warning. Please bear in mind that there may be patches of ice on the roads even at outside temperatures around +5°C." Why not show it from +5°C?????

The snowflake's purpose is to "warn" the driver of conditions (based on temp) that may offer a lower coefficient of friction.
The snowflake appears above freezing (a few degrees) and then goes away well below freezing and well above freezing.
Both my wife's BMW and my Audi use this snowflake graphic.
I can't remember how far back this goes, but we have had 3 BMW's and over 25 Audis, and frankly I can't remember one that did NOT have this feature.
The snowflake IS covered in the owner's manual.

I noticed the snowflake icon tonight when I drove back from NC to NoVa.
It was 37° outside when I stopped @ the Grocery before heading to the house.
Pretty cool

Funny seeing all the people from warmer climates chiming in and saying that's so cool after seeing it the first time.
We see that thing 6 months out of the year, lol

On my B5, it used to disapear at temperature lower that -5C, but Monday on my B8, it was still there at -6C. I suppose Audi changed the way this indicator works...
