Was just reading an article over at Gizmodo... and someone commented why don't new cars have USB ports instead of the cigarette lighters in them? Would be great to see GPS, radar detectors, and other stuff get with the times. Would be a lot nicer to be able to charge my iPhone without having to buy some separate adapter. Come on, Audi, the SD card slots are nice, but how about some USB ports?

I don't smoke, and won't ever let anyone smoke in my new A4. So the cigarette lighter is useless to me. I imagine for those that do smoke, they also carry lighters anyways.

I think there's a huge car/cigarette lighter adapter market that would tank if things switched to USB. Also with AMI and the USB cable, you essentially have a USB port in your glove compartment.

Car accessories (like GPS, DVD players, power inverters, etc...) require 12V. USB spec is for 5V. They are simply not compatible.
