Well I don't know the official reason..but I think they look and feel so much better
Plus, don't most cars have the pull-bar? It feels more natural to open the door with palm down..but I guess with the pull-bar, it gives you the choice.
Also, it might've been easier to incorporate the advanced key feature with this door handle design.

Safety maybe?
Around 15 years ago, a Mercedes dealer pointed out some interesting safety features of their vehicles. Among them was this door handle construction which was supposed to be more likely to work after a major collision. It was designed to deform but not break apart, so that it could be opened... maybe with the help of a prying device (crowbar, stick, whatever). It certainly could have been a bogus argument, but the other items she pointed out seemed pretty cool and made good sense.

Having a B8 and B7 side by side..................
The impression you get opening the door on the B8 is this is a solid well built car. I have nothing against the B5, B6 and B7 pull up door handles they have always worked great but I get a very positive feeling with the new handles.
Now this is just my opinion but I really do like the looks and feel of the B8 handles.

In Europe where they have real car magazines and safety tests....
One of the things they test and document in post--crash test results is the lb/ft of torque needed to open the door.
I also believe it is a slightly more elegant, natural motion for the hand. It's also what the competition does.
The real question should be - why were flush handles once marketed as more aerodynamic, and that would now equate to better mpg.

Keeping up with the competition and a more solid feel with a thick bar rather than a thin "flap."
Econo cars used to come with the lift handles so I think it's good Audi stepped up to the change. Then on the other hand, the A4 now has econo car tailpipes, so I guess it's a wash. hehe
