Windshield crack on my A4

3 week 6 day old 2013 A4 had it's windshield cracked by a VERY small pebble. Started as a small ding but by the end of the day it was a crack 16 inches long. Auto insurance covered the replacement but for OEM glass installed by dealer glass service was $617. Tech that did the install said that Audi did switch to a much thinner glass and is very easy to crack, he said that service techs have cracked it by letting the wiper arm hit the window too hard when changing a blade.

You need to call your insurance and verify your coverage.
On good policies, windshield damage is a $0 deductible on Comprehensive and it will not effect your rates.
I had my windshield replaced 2 years ago by Safelite after a rock from a semi truck cracked it. I have not had any problems since July 2011 when it was done. I highly recommend them. The guy knew how to handle the rain sensor and everything.
The windshield is not an OEM/Audi problem, pretty much ever. Something like 99% of the windshields in America are made by 2 companies. It's a pretty small industry for the OEMs.

Given that the cars are sold around the world I would not have guess that.

gunsmoker, that was meant for the OP. I wasn't accusing you of overpaying.
Automobiles sold in the United States are covered by a series of safety standards called Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). The ones related to windshields are FMVSS #205 ("Glazing Materials") and FMVSS #212 ("Windshield Mounting"). You can find the standards on this site, both FMVSS205 and FMVSS212.
