Winter Wheels and Tires - thoughts
I have a 2011 A4 SLine. Just wanted to get hear some thoughts on choice of wheels and winter rims. Was thinking of getting them through TireRack and having them shipped up to Calgary - still cheaper than going to the dealers here. As i'm new to this game I haven't had to go through this before. I can't use my 19" summers here during winter and it's recommended to go with slimmer tires for winter driving. They still seem to have a great winter performance rating so i dont think i would lose too much in terms of feel and responsiveness.
The recommendation from the guys there was on to go with the following setup:
225/50R17 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3
17x8 Hyper Silver moda EB1
Thoughts welcome. Cheers.

While I think the rim width of 8" also works for a 225 tyre, I have 7.5" for my winter wheels (225/50 17, 17x7.5). The slightly wider tyre gives a curb protection to the rim. When it comes to selecting rims I give a thought or two to how cleaning and waxing will work (not too sharp corners, and no text in 3D , but maybe it's just printed?
(I agree that 5 spokes looks the best.)

Slimmer tires for winter driving for sure but be careful about switching from 19" to 17" as it may create issues with calipers according to tire folks and mechanics I have spoken with. Of course, they may be leading me astray....

17" wheels should be no problem on an S Line car. Review various tire sizes shown in your Owner's Manual (look at the tire inflation pressure page).
The 17" wheel is standard on a base A4 B8 car.
You'll know best about whether needing a tire that handles deep snow on back roads or a tire that's used where the roads have been plowed and are iced over, etc.
Winter tire means taller, skinnier. You are on the right track.
The Michelin I've selected for winter duty on my car is 225/50-17. You'll find it listed in the Owner's Manual, it's one of the two 17" possibilities.
Don't you guys have a company called 1010tires.com?? Are they still in biz?

Wheels are OEM Audi 10 spoke 17x8" ET45 66.6mm hub. C/w Caps and TPMS that you wouldn't need.
Tires are Yokohama W*drive 245/45 R17 with under 4,000 documented km's.
No scratches, scuff, marks or curbing. This set is perfect for your A4.
They are located in Winnipeg but pehaps someone is driving through?

Yes, they are. They have a deal on shipping that ends Oct 17th, so if you have time you should check them out. I bought my wheels and Blizzak's from them last year. They ship from Richmond(Vancouver)BC.

uberwgn is right. You should take into account the type of winters you have up there...i.e. cold/dry, cold/slushy, cold/snowy, or other.
I recall the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 are winter performance tires, which should be an improvement over all-seasons but don't rate as well as studless ice/snow in deep snow.
I have the same Alpin PA3 on 17x7.5 wheels, I don't have any complaints when them for the half season that I had them on. My conditions were generally cold/dry, with the occasional 1-2" on the ground or icy roads in the morning.
