I think the BG44K is actually put in by a pressurized system, the BG VIA. The Via costs about $200. The $400 for parts and labor is still a lot but not totally out of line. I have heard that the BG44K works pretty well and is good for the direct injection, but I do not have any personal experience.

My last car went 140K miles and I always turned down fuel injector cleaning and it ran just fine (every tank of gas was Shell V-power), so unless you are using bad gas, likely never?

Thanks. I’ve never put any gas in my B9 except Shell V-Power so that’s good to know.

Probably cheaper to actually replace the injectors themselves.

"Counteroffer: if you can pull my car into service bay #1 back there and let me watch you pull the injectors out while I watch through the window, show me that they are indeed dirty/out of factory spec, and I'll pay double your quoted price for a cleaning. Hell, I'll even buy a set of new ones to keep in my home garage as spares. But if you pull them out and they're not dirty, you're letting me borrow an RS for the rest of the week while you put them back in for free. No bamboozle!"

As an aside, I had all 6 injectors removed from my /94 Acura NSX after they were in there 15 years and sent to RC Fuel Injection in CA to be cleaned and calibrated. Cost was significantly less than Audi dealer is quoting OP. After 15 years 5 of the 6 were in decent shape but not 100%. The sixth was in need of help.

Any time services up and above what is specified in the maintenance schedule in owner's manual are offered/suggested especially on a car still under warranty I am on high alert.

Best,
Jeff

BG44K can be just added to the tank, but it also can be pressurized. BG44K is nothing magical, but it is a top-quality cleaner recognized to work well when things need cleaned. I worked at a Volvo dealership in service for years, and we had a lot of miss-fires or rough idles on a certain generation of engines. We always recommended BG44K in the tank every 2-3 oil changes, and most customers chose to add it to their service (no labor cost). Over about a 2 year time we saw virtually a complete end of customers complaining about rough idea and misfires. It's not magic, i's just a quality cleaner than works well. John Deere had some diesel engine injectors gunk up over time, causing a redesign eventually. In the mean time John Deere, as a warranty covered service, used BG44K pressurized into the fuel rail to clean injectors. I'm sure other products work well and are similar, but Volvo, BMW, MB, John Deere.....just a few examples of brands that actually used or recommended (in writing) BG44K. It's a good product...IF you car needs it.
