All more reason as to why the use of mobiles phones whilst in the car should be banned, as they are in the UK. Next, I hope, it'll be the use of touchscreen technology that is becoming more popular..

So sorry about this, but glad to hear you are okay! By chance, did pre-sense rear go off? Seat belt automatically tighten, etc?

Well it is banned (in most states anyway, certainly where I live), but that doesn't prevent people from doing it anyway, just like drunk driving (or speeding). Now that I'm sure everyone on this board has done before, too.

As others have said, surface damage may conceal much worse structural/frame damage. Definitely make sure the entire car is looked over. Sorry to hear you were hit by an idiot driver. Getting hit by distracted drivers is my number 1 fear nowadays.

Good thing automatic emergency braking will be standard in all new cars in 5 years, and widespread in 10-15. Some car manufacturers are already on top of it (Toyota, Honda).

These safety features should be standard in all cars - kudos to Toyota who seems to be really taking a lead in democratizing many of the advanced emergency features and forcing other mainstream automakers to compete and equip.

The problem is that in the US people can hold onto their cars for such a long time especially in the non-wealthier parts of the country that it'll take awhile for these newer features to populate - like ABS and airbags did after arriving mass market in the 80s.
