Default Key stopped working ...

Yesterday I drove to a store, and when I came back out and got in my car, I pressed the START button and got a message (can't remember the exact words) saying, "Please put the key in the designated area."

I remember reading a post a while back that said sometimes you have to recalibrate the key by putting in a spot inside the front of the center console, so that's where I put the key, and then was able to start the car.

I wonder what "uncalibrated" the key in the first place?

How do you even start your car if the key fob stops working. O_o

So where did you put your key to recalibrate it? I used to have a slot in the dash of my S5 where you could stick the key in. I don't see anything similar in the A4. Did you just place it in that slot on the right side of the console (where I usually keep my coins)?

The spot is in the compartment under the armrest. If you lift it up, you will see there is a spot labeled at the very front. You simply place the key there.

Thanks! I looked in there and only noticed the slots at the back. Very helpful!

Sometimes if you try to start the car without the key in the car, or if the key is buried deep in a pocket and is unrecognized you will get that error. Not a big deal, actually is a nice failsafe if someone tries to steal your car.

Back on this thread, I lifted up the armrest and looked that the inside front of the console. There is no slot there for the key. So I guess you just lay the key there?

I think what he meant is the part inside the armrest, right in front where there's a symbol of a key with signals emitted from it (like the symbol seen in the A6 center console, on the left side next to the Audi multimedia system - picture for reference)

EDIT - Saw this in a review

That shows Prestige. Do you have it in your Premium Plus?

I think so. I think I saw it in my car when I checked it the first time. Now that you've mentioned it, I don't exactly remember. But I guess it should be there since it's for calibrating the key.

My BMW has it on the steering column, in the right side, whereas my A6 has it on the center console next to the CD player. So the A4 should have it in the armrest since I didn't see a symbol anywhere easily visible.
