Default Really disappointed in the MMI / CarPlay on my 2018 A4

Considering how much attention to detail has clearly been given to the car, I am shocked at how buggy and unreliable the MMI / CarPlay has been.
  • Sometimes the backup camera doesn’t load
  • The quality of the backup camera is terrible compared to my GF’s Corolla
  • Yesterday the MMI crashed and required restart
  • “Drawing” to spell text with your finger on the dial is a joke in terms of accuracy
  • If I unplug my phone during use, the MMI sometimes gets stuck in voiceover mode (my music is stuck at 20% volume)
  • Google Maps freezes or won’t load often (not sure if this is an Audi problem, an Apple problem, or a Google problem)
If this was an old car, I’d be more forgiving, but 2018 doesn’t seem that old to me…

Weird I just bought a 2018 Audi A4 3 months ago, smooth sailing for me.
1. When you put the car in reverse, does the Parking screen appear with a blacked out backup camera?
2. Premium plus and premium have awful quality considering the model year, so Ill give you that.
3. Were you doing anything when MMI crashed ?
4. You get used the drawing, speech to text is good alternative.
5. Volume issue, do you have Waze running? are you on iOS 15? If so, stop using Waze for now and make its not running in the background.
6. No idea about the Google Maps issue.

My 2017 has none of those issues, unless you're considering one time in two years of ownership to be "sometimes". I very rarely use the spelling, as Google Maps on my iPhone is used for everything, but I used it today for the first time in months and everything was correct first time.

I have to agree that the backup camera is a such low resolution one. None of the The hand writhing input isn’t stellar but works. CarPlay works very well on my 2017 and I am using it every single day for commute without any issue. Compare to some other brands where you need to pay to use Carplay in 2017/2018 time frame, I am happy that Audi offered it for free.

I have a MY18 P+ and I have noted a couple of times where CarPlay would quit and jump back to MMI. If I was playing music, it would stop. I had to reselect CarPlay in the MMI for it to work. It happened several times using the Audi supplied, coiled lightening cable. I switch to an Apple USB to lightening cable and it happened a couple more times. After switching to some off-brand Amazon 10pk of USB to lightening cables that cost $8, it hasn't happened since. So cable selection appears to be important to maintain a good connection to the MMI.

Backup camera resolution is excellent on Prestige models, but not on P or PP models.

Maybe it's the screen that's lower resolution then?

I know I had a rental Progressiv (roughly equivalent to US Premium Plus) and the image quality from the rear camera was measurably worse than on my 2017 Technik (roughly equivalent to US Prestige) which also had the 360 camera. Whether it was the screen or the camera or something in the middle, I couldn't tell you.

Yes, it could be the screen. I've had many Premium/PP+ loaners that were noticeably worse quality/resolution than my Prestige.
