Tint Laws
Keep in mind the factory tint of 93% is multiplicative with an aftermarket tint.
For example if your state law is 35% you could use a 40% aftermarket tint to stay legal. 35% divided by 93% = 37% net. If the legal tint is 27% you could add a 30% tint. 27% / 93% = 29%. And so on.

Good shops can discuss legal levels etc. with you. Also, they can show examples of finished tint jobs and sometimes may have a car(s) hand that they are working on.

I agree. Still, it's nice to know in advance the max legal tint in your state before you go to the installer.

Here's an image of the back and more importantly how the 40 looks compared to the front windshield that's not tinted.

I went with Sunguard Sentry Ceramic 5% in the rears and 20% in the fronts. Also did the strip along the windshield since the sun was always in my face at 5%. Will post pics later.

You mentioned you will be driving in California, which does not allow ANY aftermarket tint on the front side windows. Enforcement of this law? Well, that's another matter.
I wanted to keep all four side windows uniform in appearance, and did not want to attract the attention of the police, so I went with Huper Optik 70 percent tint. It has exceptional heat rejection and UV protection.
I was not interested in a "dark" tint for privacy, as I am quite handsome and want everyone to know it (!)
There is very little correlation with how dark a tint presents in situ and its heat rejection/UV properties.
Huper Optik has options from 80 percent down to 35 percent. I spent a little for this brand because of its lifetime warranty and commitment to only using highly trained/certified installers.
My only regret? I did not tint the sunroof at the same time.
