Default Pictures look like it was underhood and not in dash

On the one interior shot, dashboard looks intact. If correct, that eliminates a lot of normal wiring questions. That the outside mirror is melted so badly but not the interior seems odd and that maybe fuel was involved--certainly seemed underhood. If it was just serviced last week as one of the posts mentions, I would be looking at the possibility something in the fuel system was not serviced correctly. That can happen to any car unfortunately.

Default Re: Please keep us posted

I'm really interested in the root cause of this.

Default I just met her tonight and here's the update, not very useful unfortunately

1. Car is still under investigation. Audi sent two technicians to check it out. She doesn't have the report from local fire marshall yet.

2. The car was serviced the previous week and she did not drive it since the day the incident happened.

3. She drove it a few miles, parked it outside of the piano teacher's house and turned off the car.

4. Picked up the daughter, went back to the car.

5. When she was about to drive off, she saw some smoke coming out of the hood.

6. Smoke got worse and developed into a serious fire.

7. No explosion even with a full tank of gas.

You didn't run into anything? If you didn't then most likely the coil pack started it.
