Default Anyone ever ripped out the center console?

I'm about to do this to fit a Navigation Plus (i am in the UK so have to swap out my single DIN radio, double DIN climate console for a twin double DIN one - 8HO 858 005A - groan)

From what I can work out there are:

Two screws in the footwell either side,
Two in the radio compartment,
Two under the ashtray,
Two under the handbrake (to remove a bit of platic so that console can lift over it)
One under the phone kit bit under the armrest
One in the rear ashtray

And hopefully... voila!

Anyone got any experience with this? I'll post some picks of me ripping the cab apart and putting it back together when the Nav Plus arrives!! Maybe i'll go mad and replace it with a mk1 Ford Escort one instead!!

Default Messy job - you're not kidding!!!

Does look like a messy job - quite looking forward to it! I hope I don't have any urgent trips to make halfway through!!

I didn't realise the cage and the centre console were different parts so it looks like I need to order a double din cage now as well to go with the new centre console. The cab cage must be slightly different to the non-cab one looking at the position of buttons etc. Ignore the bundle of wires behind the climate - its my handsfree kit.

I take it the cage is seperate from the centre console? From your pics it looks like you removed the centre console, which left the cage 'hanging' ready to be removed seperately.

I'm really hoping the climate control faceplate will still fit once it is lowered in the new console (hopefully the shape of the new console takes this into account), otherwise I'll need a new climate control panel as well. Aaargh! Any idea how much these cost and where to get?! Looks like the A6 owners on Yahoo! have to get new climate control boxes. If the difference is minimal, maybe I'll file mine down in the short term.

My RNS-D nav+ (8E0 035 192B) comes with an adaptor loom so the hope is that it is all plug and play. My cab is an '04 so I've no idea how much will work and how much wont - all this talk of TMC boxes and getting the red display in the dash working is a mystery to me.

Cheers for the link!!

Default Re: Messy job - you're not kidding!!!

Those are not really my pictures, I just remembered having them seen on Yahoo. Lucky me, my A4 came with the Symphony.

There were many threads on boards in Germany talking about upgrading single DIN to double DIN. All indicate that the A/C control unit (a 500 Euro part) is different. Some said they dremeled the single DIN unit to fit further down, some others said they got any double DIN A/C unit from ebay and moved the electronics (which is apparently the same for single and double DIN). You will also need a new ashtray (at least the lid as far as I understood). And those who were really brave dremeled the singled DIN cage to hold a doubled DIN unit, with mixed results.

If you don't want to mess with TMC units and Bosch/Audi CAN wires, get the new DVD Navi+, the RNS-E. It has TMC included and connects plug and play to your Concert harness.

Good luck...

Default This is going to turn into a 'mare!!!

Thanks for the tips - I really wish I had just ordered my A4 with Nav now!

The really annoying part is that I specced my car to have a Symphony but the exact same model in stock (which I could have immediately rather then 6 weeks from the factory) had a Concert. Of course, I went for the immediately available Concert.

I think I will dremel down the climate while I save up for a new climate panel, and live without the ashtray for a while.

Mind you, the ashtray/ashtray cover is bound to be well cheap -- something the new climate panel will not be!!

Default So it's in - but just wont work!!!

OK, so the Navi+ has arrived and looks awesome. Only trouble is the most important thing.... getting it to work!

It came with an adaptor loom (one of those with the button to allow you to watch TV on the move) which plugs into my existing radio loom and plugging this in-line fires the unit up (apart from the fact that the buttons don't light up when the headlights are switched on - are they supposed to?).

Most importantly, the little pointer (showing my position) on the map doesn't move when I'm driving.

I can see from the GPS screen that the longtitude and latitude is changing as I move, but the map only updated ONCE showing a new position when I went on a 1 mile drive. Is this something to do with the way it is wired? I'm concerned my loom (which originally housed a CONCERT radio) is not suitable.

Any help would be great.. I'm reluctant to rip the car apart to do the install until the thing works... it's bad enough testing it by driving with it balanced on the gear-shift!!!

Default ...sorted now.

With the help of Dan Gold's excellent site I've wired the ABS speed signal, the illumination, the reverse signal, updated the firmware and its all good!

Tested it all out by driving with the unit balanced on a tennis racket wedged on the radio hole.

Now to rip out the console!

Cheers!

Default If you're doing this in a cab...

...the ABS speed wire is on pin 14 and is black/blue, as opposed to pin 13 and blue/white as shown at www.nav-plus.com. Hopefully this'll help someone

Default Hate to tell you this but you should have gone for

the new DVD based system. I test drove an A3 with it yesterday and it makes the Nav+ (which I also have)seem completely out of date. The 3D graphics are far more accurate and I loved the way the screen flips down to reveal 2 SD slots for downloaded music. Also the non-Bose sound was far better than my Bose-equipped system.

BTW does it affect yr warranty?
