I have a 2004 Audi A4 that flashes red behind the dashboard “P R N D S” gear indicator. Can someone tell me how to get the fault code and what this might be? The manual says it is in failsafe mode if this happens. When I begin to drive, it won’t click into gear until I have revved the engine slightly. This car has been a money pit…I wonder how much this is going to cost me now…

How many miles have you done ??

The gearbox oil should be changed every 40,000 miles

It could just need an oil change or it could be the ECU or worse

You need vagcom/vcds to check fault codes

Get it done asap

Agreed. Get that checked out. If it's just the fluid now, you might be able to save the TCM.

The blinking gearshift indicator is almost certainly the ECU unit.
Eventually you'll experience problems with the reverse .. slipping.
You can get the ECU unit fixed ..
I sent mine away and it was back fixed in two days for €120 .. Problem Solved.
