Shocking!

I just replaced my 1997 A4 with a lightly used 2008 Cabriolet. I love the car, but the difference in ride quality is jarring. The 1997 had the sport suspension, but smoothed out all but the worst roads; the 2008 rides worse than my Jeep, pounding over even small defects.
Is this just the way it is, or should I be looking for failed shocks (at 17K miles?) or some other problem?

I recall that the Cab's normal suspension is equivalent to the sedan's sport suspension. My Cab rides a lot like an English sports car, kind of jolting. And it's the normal suspension. I test-drove a Cab with sports suspension before I chose the one I bought, and it rode too stiffly for me or my wife to enjoy. I believe the sports suspension Cabs usually have 5-spoke wheels, and the normal suspension Cabs have 6 spokes.

My S4 cab is a hard ride too - as intended. The best way for you to get a little less "harshness" but keep the excellent body control would be to drop down to 16" wheels if you don't already have them and go as large as you can on sidewall.
