Recently when I tried to start my new (3200 miles) car, it would not start, and a big warning appeared on the dash display- in big letters "Transmission malfunction"! After trying again to start the car, I got a message that it was "OK to drive with the malfunction". I drove to the dealer, and got a loaner. Dealer had never heard of the message. Got the car back the next day, Told it was necessary to reprogram the transmission. Car now much more responsive in dynamic mode, like day & night difference. I am guessing that the car was never as responsive as intended, but was good before. Now its great. Has anyoe else seen this message? After a 15 minute drive home it seems far better, but I will have to drive under more varied conditions before I decide.

I received the same message on my 2012 A6 (~10,000 miles). Dealer could not detect any codes and therefore did nothing. Thankfully, it has not reoccurred. What did your dealer do to "reprogram" the transmission? Thanks.

Dealer said he had to go to Audi Factory for help, and was told to update transmission to current specs, and he did. Now is better than before failure.

I have a 2013 A6 with approx 11,000 miles. This morning, I started the car, and I received the same warning. I turned the car off and restarted it. The malfunction warning cleared, but the display still showed an exclamation point. I back out, turned the car off again, restarted a third time and the error was completely cleared. My nearest Audi dealer is about 120 miles away and I'm wondering if it's necessary to go to the dealer only to find out that it's not an issue. If anyone has any feedback or more info on this, I'd appreciate it.

We had this problem and the dealer claimed it's related a glitch of some sort in the key used to start the car. If you've had the problem, there should be codes stored in the car's computer which the dealer will find if you mention the problem the next time the car is in for service. I would suggest continuing to drive the car and not making a special trip, unless the problem happens again. In our case, the dealer replaced the key and the problem has not returned.
