2014 A6 TDI MPG
We just purchased a leftover 2014 A6 TDI last week. Primarily my wife's car but I have had the chance to drive it a couple of times.
Impressive car to drive to say the least. This is our first go around with a German automobile. Up until this point we were mainly buying American and Japanese automobiles.
So far we are impressed with MPG considering the car still has less than 1000 miles on it. My wife is a fairly conservative driver so that helps the cause. 1st partial tank average was 36.4mph and 2nd tank is averaging 39mpg. Our normal traveling area is mainly rural and average speeds around 55mph.

I think it depends on the roads you drive on. On dark roads it is helpful in picking up people walking on the side of the road. It is also useful in picking up animals on the side of the road. It does better when it is cooler out. I am guessing that on warm summer nights there is not as much of a temperature difference between an animal and the surrounding environment. Of course going cross town in NYC it is almost useless.

After 13,000 miles we get a consistent 33+mpg in the suburbs and 38 - 40 on the highway (at a constant 75 - 77 mph - speed limit in northern NH is 70).
As for the night vision I think it is great in NE as a safety measure for moose on the highway and pedestrians in the suburbs at night. Keep in mind that the car will brake on its own to avoid hitting identified pedestrians; it is amazingly good at identifying pedestrians at night! I think it only works above about 72 deg F, so 99% of the time at night in northern NE. NoahWeb summarized this car very well with: "epic mix of performance and mileage!"
Hoping the A9 will eventually come with a TDI engine in the US

Not sure what PerlFather meant by saying Nightvision only works above 72°F. I use it to spot animals at night and it worked all winter and summer. It's as KevinGary says. Since Nightvision is an infrared detector if it gets very hot (>95°F; 35°C) and all the objects in the field are very hot then it will not work well (no contrast) since everything in the field will be hot and white. In winter it is very sharp and intense when you see an animal at night (great contrast). It's an amazing system. Reports have it that the 2016 A6 will have an enhanced animal detection and braking algorithm.
The placement is not optimal. It would be easier to use if it were a HUD but I can see what Audi didn't put it there. It could be a technical challenge and it might be distracting. You have to change your visual scan at night to include the Nightvision if you're looking for animals. Not so for pedestrians as it really lights them up and lets you know something's out there.
At 18.6K I still smile every time I push the button to start my A6 TDI. It's just got it all in spite of a few very minor niggles like a the very amusing trunk opener, etc.

I am averaging 26.7mpg (US) all time for 30,000km. This is hand calculated. I think I'm one of the highest diesels average MPGs I've seen. My best tank was 6.44L/100km (36mpg) on 95% highway trip - ripping it. I got 1175km out of that tank. My worst was 10.83L/100km (21.82mpg). That being said, I pay zero attention about how to better my fuel economy. I am not light footed too.
Keep in mind, all figures above are calculated. The DIC lies by about 7%.
I don't know how you guys are getting 41mpg. You must set the cruise on 60mph and draft a tractor trailer, downhill. I have a lengthy trip on the highway coming up, so I'll try to be nice and see what happens.
All things considered. I am very happy with the car and my mpg given my driving style.
My last car averaged 13mpg on premium gas, so I can't complain about this one.
Oh yes, one more thing. It is cold here 5 months out of the year, and I have 20" sport package for the summer.

My numbers are hand calculated. I set my cruise on 70-72 and drive. Mostly flat and since I use the managed lanes here there is very little traffic and no stop and go.
