Definitely the tires are critical, but my A6 has been awesome in the snow we often get in the winter in Indiana with good all season tires. The A6 does way better than the 02 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 we had given its lower center of gravity and great ESP.
Remember that all wheel drive helps you to go forward and not lose it as easily when traction is low, but it doesn't particularly help you a lot stopping. You also have to watch out if your non-snow tires fill the tread with snow. If you get the adjustable suspension, raising it will help if clearance is an issue in high snow. I'm looking forward to that in the S6 if I should have some issue with the driveway.
