Perhaps something like an errant plastic bag was blown across the road or a sizeable bird or flying squirrel going by the pre-sense sensor set it off. If side assist is set off by people passing close to the edge of their garage doors, why not something like I’ve mentioned?
I've not once had the brake guard engage in 8500 miles and only a couple of warning chimes. I've even tried to engage it deliberately, just short of actually hitting someone, to no avail.
Based on the OP's description, there's a chance there was a glitch. Hopefully, a very rare one.
