I finally had time to combine the car tracking ideas and suggestions in this thread with the MMI tether mod I did about a year ago.
The goal was to have all this with the cleanest install possible. The tiny Aukey 2 port charger, and the mini usb hub and shorter cables made things much easier.
So the end result is:
- A phone in the trunk with a data only SIM (I use the one from project FI, many other options are available as discussed in other threads)
- This phone provides a permanent hotspot as well as tracks the car in case its stolen. Or you want to stalk your significant other hehe.
- The hotspot gets consumed by the router to provide permanent data for Audi connect for cars that don't have a sim slot or people that don't want to pay for a second data connection or whatever other reason.
- Since the trunk phone is attached to a power block it will last at least a week even if the car is not started. Note: I learned that the power block MUST support passthrough charging for this to work properly.
Interesting. I don't fully understand what you're doing.
What is happening with the USB to AMI connection? Are you somehow tethering the data connection to the car? If yes, my other questions aren't really relevant, but if no, why do you need the USB hub and NIC? Can't the phone just provide the hotspot?
