Kind of strange that there are two different stories to this. Maybe it is only recognized in the A6 and not the S6 yet?

The S6 is a DCT, right? Clunky shifting into first gear when coming to a stop is actually normal behavior for those. One of the downsides of the mechanical clutch.

Had the tsb performed yesterday. Abrupt downshifting is totally gone. What surprised me is that the transmission is MUCH smoother in accelerating as well (and I never even noticed a problem there!).
Anyway, the tsb number is 2030007/2 (it's a software update).

FWIW, my 2013 A6 doesn't have this issue - transmission is very smooth in all gear changes up and down in both D and S. Looks like the TSB was a software update already employed on the 2013's and now being rolled out to the 2012's.
